At the Canadian Hearing Institute, our team is invested in helping Blenheim residents to rise above hearing loss. Our goal is to bring back your hearing, so that you can hear the sounds of day-to-day life more clearly.

Categories of Hearing Loss

Conductive Hearing Loss: When sound is not conducted efficiently through the outer ear canal to the eardrum and the tiny bones (ossicles) of the middle ear, conductive hearing loss occurs. This category of hearing loss is experienced as a reduction in sound level or the ability to hear quieter sounds. Often medication or surgery can correct this type of hearing loss.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Damage to the inner ear (cochlea), or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain can result in sensorineural hearing loss or SNHL. Medical intervention cannot typically correct SNHL which is the most common form of permanent hearing loss experienced in Blenheim.

Even when speech is loud enough to hear, it may still be unclear or sound muffled, as SNHL reduces the ability to hear faint sounds.

Mixed Hearing Loss: Occasionally sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) occurs in conjunction with conductive hearing loss. This means there may be damage to both the outer or middle ear, and the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve. In this case, the condition is referred to as ‘mixed hearing loss’ which can range in severity.
